Our Magnetic Water Story
We live in Southern California and the hardness of our water is 300 PPM (parts per million) or 17.5 GPG (grains per gallon). These numbers indicate we have very hard water and have evidence to support this.
In our quest to fix our hard water issues, we found the usual water softener or conditioner systems that cost hundreds to thousands of dollars for the initial cost. After that initial cost, you then have the maintenance cost of replacing filters and buying salt on a regular basis. To add to the cost, some of these systems took up a lot of additional floor space for installation. In our home that meant placing the big tanks in our attic which was not an ideal place, especially when we need to replace the resin tanks.
We kept searching and found the electronic descalers that were priced between $100 to $300, with no maintenance and no additional floor space needed to install but this required electricity so an electrical plug has to be close by. We almost tried this option but we saw an ad for magnetic water which is very similar to the electronic descalers in the way they work but magnets don’t need electricity, easier to install and are at a much lower cost.
These magnets were very intriguing which led us to do some research and were surprised to find a number of scientific studies to back up the benefits of descaling and preventing hard water build up. After doing more research we were surprised to find a lot more benefits, especially in regards to health, agriculture and the environment.
We also came across some people saying that magnets are a scam, snake oil, they don’t work, and on and on. Since the magnets are inexpensive and were easily installed and removed, it was really a no-brainer to try this experiment.
What Type of Magnets Would Work Best
We then researched all the magnetic water products that were already available on the market. We found that the best magnets are neodymium magnets. They are the strongest and last at least 5 lifetimes so pretty much forever. We settled on two products that fit these criteria and chose the least expensive magnets. They were both easy to install but the inexpensive magnets required more handling care.
So the experiment was started. To give you an idea of our situation, we have a 47 year old home with copper pipes, 6 year old dishwasher and a 1 year old water heater. After installing the magnets on our cold and hot water pipes, we found out after just a few days these magnets are actually working and got better with time!
I still can’t believe we have actually found the best low-cost solution to the hard water problem! To add to this, we found more amazing benefits and haven’t been able to find a negative thing from using these magnets. All we can say is we are so very glad we tried it and went beyond our expectations!
Sometimes the best solution is the simplest solution!
The main question that came up after doing this successful experiment was why didn’t we know about this sooner? Well, it comes down to money of course. Water softener companies can’t make much off magnets and there are no replenishment (salt bags or resin tanks) or maintenance revenue either.
We found out that this technology of using magnets to treat water has been around commercially since the 1930’s! Instead of feeling deprived, we feel very blessed to have found this information and want to make it our mission to let everyone else know about this well kept secret.
What We Noticed During the First Month
This is in chronological order of our experience and will add to it as we go along.
- Hard water buildup on bathroom sink drains was flaking off
- Descaling of pipes and appliances is working much quicker than I thought it would take
- More soap lather and slippery feel of skin after shower
- Toilet bowl ring takes a longer time to form
- Taking a shower feels like a spa treatment with fresh mountain or spring water
- Hot water recirculating pump and sensor valve were more active and had a higher-pitched tone when pumping water, reaching the desired 100 deg. temperature at the faucet sooner
- Received hot water sooner in the kitchen sink that is not connected to the hot water recirculating pump
- Shower doors and fixtures stayed clean of hard water buildup after cleaning them thoroughly beforehand
- Water tastes better
- Kitchen and bathroom faucets and shower heads are staying clean and not getting hard water build-up
- Shower glass doors and shower walls are staying clean – no more soap scum
- Watermarks on the stainless steel dishwasher door and refrigerator door were easily cleaned with magnetic water and a microfiber towel.
- Have more energy throughout the day and during workouts
- Pets (cats) have more energy chasing each other – not sure if that’s a good thing
- Hair is shiny, not lifeless and dry, and looks and feels thicker
- Water feels ‘wetter’ meaning more absorbent due to a reduced surface tension of the water
- Vitamix blades had long-term stains that were cleaned off in a few minutes with just a scrubbing sponge – staying clean too!
- Magnetized water in a humidifier will produce lots of white powdery stuff from the minerals. This powder stuff gets everywhere so we’re going back to using distilled water in our humidifier because we don’t want to clean that often.
- We removed the second pair of magnets from our hot water pipes and there is no difference in our magnetized water. So we now have a second pair to give to family or friends as a gift.
- After using these magnets for over 2 years, we have noticed hardly any calcification on our shower heads and faucets. We believe this is due to our 50-year-old water pipes being cleaned from calcium buildup. We also have had no sewer backups in the last 2 years, and the water drains better than ever. So don’t expect instant results, as it takes time to remove the calcium buildup.
